Lake Hiawatha's floodwall along River Drive went up in 1986 and was designed for a 100-year storm; in 2024, residents petitioned the township to extend it. The Sandalwood Drive section drains to a pump station that lifts stormwater to the Rockaway, and a township-commissioned flood study found the station's capacity falls short in large storms, so those blocks can flood in a short, hard rain.
